Well I got new running shoes and socks for my birthday, and a subscription to Runners World for Christmas. So I figured I'd better actually start running again.

I helped a buddy move Saturday, and I was still pretty sore this morning, but I got out and did 2mi anyway. I ran .5mi, walked .25mi, ran .75mi and then cooled down w/ a .5mi walk. When I got home I started my quest to 100 pushups and 100 situps, and did some yoga to stretch.

All in all a good work out, looking forward to actually keeping at it this time.. I did forget to not wear low cut socks w/ the new shoes, bloodied the back of both of my ankles. But the socks I got are 4 different types of Nikes, and they are pretty cool w/ different fabrics at different parts of the foot, thicker at the ball and heel, tighter around the arch.. like I said pretty cool, who knows how much, if any, they help, but they cant hurt.

I did run w/ my iPod, but I didnt pay attention to time at all.

Last year at this time, I did pretty well running 3 days a week and in the morning, so I'm going to try that for a while again..

Pretty chilly this morning, and I couldn't find my vest, so I had to wear the girlfriends. I figured nobody would be out at 0600. And I was right no one was out at 0600 when I started stretching, but quite a few people were out at 0650 when I finished my cool down. At least it's only pastel blue and not pink like everything else she owns!! 28 deg w/ a wind chill of 20 when I started.

I ran .75mi, walked for a minute, ran .75mi back. Then did a .5mi cool down walk. Felt good, but man our my shins tight!! I stretched them 3 times yesterday, and for about 10min both before and after the run. I think that just sitting on the floor w/ my legs under me is about the best stretch I've found.

Used band-aids and the longer socks to keep my shoes from rubbing my heels, and it worked fine.

Did all the push-ups and a few sit-ups, abs are still quite sore from Monday..

Good run..

UPDATE: When my girlfriend finally woke up this morning, I went in to my closet to find my VERY MASCULINE vest, and I found a pair of gloves! Not just any pair of gloves, but a pair I had bought as a joke for a buddy when he was in Iraq.. they are the kind we use to wear when we played soccer. They are little kids knit gloves, they are literally smaller than the palm of my hand, but when I stretch them and put them on they are great for running in! The knit stretches and keep my hands from getting too hot, but they provide some warmth!! Sweet!

I took Friday off because I could feel my shins getting pretty tight.. I stretched 'em out quite a bit over the long weekend..

I didnt run yesterday.. mostly because I sat down instead of rolling out of bed into my shoes..

Today it was pretty cold, and really windy.. but I did .75mi run, walk for a second, .75mi run, .5mi cool down. Weather.com said 35deg w/ a windchill of 20deg when I got back. But I was pretty warm the whole time, actually had to take the hat off towards the end..

Did my pushups and situps at the end.. pulled a muscle in my back at some point.. pretty sore now.

Had to go get 5 vaccines this morning, w/ about 5 more to go next week.. getting ready for a trip for work. Dont know how that'll effect things for the rest of this week..

Good work out, Thursday I should be up to 1.5mi straight if there arent 20mph winds..

Hope you didn't have to get the smallpox vaccine...that one made my arm swell and feel like crap for several days.

From Emery on Wed, Jan 21, 2009 at 08:13:57

Not yet, that's one that I might have to get Monday depending on what the CDC tells the doctor. But I went to the CDC website last night and it wasn't listed. We'll see.. Both of my arms are a little sore now, but not bad.

2mi... ran 1mi, walked for a sec, ran .25mi, stopped to talk to the girlfriend for a second, ran .25mi. Then my .5mi cool down walk. Felt good, pretty cold, but not as windy as Tue. My legs felt good, but I was definitely winded!!

Did my pushups and situps.. I didnt think I'd be able to get them all in, both of my shoulders were a little sore this morning from the vaccines Tue, and my back was a little tender still yesterday. But I thought I'd give them a shot and see what happened, and I got them all done..

Doing some reading yesterday I think I'm not getting enough carbs directly after my workout. I thought the rolled oats I put in my smoothies had more carbs than they do. So I looked around this morning and found some Grape Nuts so I threw them in.. YUCK! I knew I didnt like them by themselves, but I didnt think they'd ruin my whole smoothie. I was wrong. I dont know if I'll do it again or if I'll try and find another source of carbs..

I also went back and reread a bunch of my blogs from last year.. and it seems so obvious that I was progressing to fast and ignoring the signs my body was giving me. So I'm going to stay at 1.5mi for a while, and work my way up slowly this time.

2mi walk to try and break in some new hiking boots. Then 1.5mi run and .5mi cool down walk.

Top of my left foot was pretty sore by the end of everything.. The boots were obviously a little tight and bothered that area a little bit. Then I'm trying to tie my shoes a little tighter because I usually keep them where I can slip them on and off and I'm thinking that might be a little loose. So maybe I went too tight..

Ran the whole 1.5mi though.. felt really good. Stretched several times yesterday, as well as this morning and again between the walk and the run. Focused on the shins, but hit the whole lower body too.

Did my pushups and sit ups..

Ran pretty late tonight, so I ate late. Dont like that, but at least I ran.

I'm going to try and do this same workout M,W,F this week.. but in the mornings.

2mi walk in the boots, w/ the dogs. .75mi run, walk for a second, .75mi run, .5mi cool down walk..

All felt good, right calf a little tight towards the end of the run.. stretched well when I got home.

Did my push-ups and sit-ups..

Good work out.

Legs are a little sore.. body is a little sore.. feeling a little run down. So I'm taking today off. No running, no push-ups, no sit-ups.. MIGHT go for a 2mi walk later tonight, but not sure..

2mi walk in boots, .75mi run, walk for a sec, .75mi run, .5mi cool down walk..

Felt good, I think the extra day off did my body good! I did walk all over DC yesterday, probably got ~2mi in.

Did my push-ups and sit-ups.

Running a little low on time this morning, I ditched the 2mi warm up and the .5mi cool down.. Instead I ran .75mi, walked for a second, ran .5mi, walked the last .25 as a cool down.

I was definitely feeling the brownies, lumpia, and liquid carbs from the football game Sunday! I was hurting most of the way. I didnt feel like I was really breathing fast at any point, but didnt seem to be able to "catch" my breath, and my legs felt offly heavy!

I did 2 sets of push-ups before the phone started ringing for work.. so I ditched the rest of the work out, and hit the shower.

Some is better than none, I guess..

I read a forum discussion about lost sheep and lone faithfuls where you commented and thought I would come see how you were doing. Glad to see you have been running a bit. I started running last year and have had my troubles as well. Good luck with your running goals.

From Emery on Mon, Feb 09, 2009 at 10:03:04

Thank you for the good wishes.

I do find that the blog really helps, especially if I blog every day I'm scheduled to run. Even if I dont run for whatever reason, at least I'm keeping running in my mind. I also got a subscription to Runners World and I find that reading an article or two from it just before I go to sleep on nights before I'm scheduled to run helps me wake up motivated!! (How could you not be motivated by Matt Long's story from March's issue?!)

Good luck to you too, I think you'll find lots of people willing and able to help you on here!!

2mi walk in boots, 1.5mi run, .5mi cool down walk.

Felt good today. Ran the whole 1.5mi.

Calf muscles were both really sore durring walk, but I stretched again while I changed my shoes and everything felt really good on the run. Wind was pretty strong durring the warm up walk, but wasnt too bad on the run.

I think Firday I'm going to go 1.75mi on the run, with the idea being I'll do 1.75mi Monday and Friday and 1.5mi on Wednesday next week.

Started a "little" late today, so I'm bailing on my push-ups. I had already decided to skip the sit-ups today in hopes my back will feel better w/ a week off.

Good run..

2mi walk in boots, 1.75mi run, .25mi cool down walk.

The muscles around my right achiles were fairly sore yesterday and this morning my calves felt pretty tight, as well. So I thought I'd stretch and start the walk and see how things went. The first .25-.5mi of the walk my calves were really burning but they losened up and they felt good when I finished the walk. Actually they felt much better than they did Wednesday. So I decided to strech some more and give the run a shot, but I was going to stop at 1.5mi.

I changed my course a little this morning to make room for the extra .25mi w/o having to loop back. I could choose to either stop running .5mi out and get the exact same workout I've been doing or I could keep going to .25mi out. My run felt great, everything felt great.. so I went w/ the longer run. Instead of looping to make my cool down a full .5mi, but I was lazy and just did .25mi.

My right calf is a little sore now, I'm going to stretch again and I'm thinking next week I'll go w/ 1.5mi Monday and Wednesday, and 1.75mi Friday.

Bailing on pushups again.. bummer..

Took the youngest pup on the warm up walk, so I only did 1.5mi w/ her. Then .75mi run, walk for a sec, .5mi run, .25mi walk.

Legs just didnt feel that great today. Heavy head wind to start. Just before the "cool down walk" my right calf got really tight. Not sore, just tight. So I ditched the last .25mi of the run and turned into the cool down walk.

Didnt feel great after the 1.75mi run Friday, so decided to stick w/ 1.5mi for another week at least.

Still bailing on the calisthenics for now, back feels fine but I dont want to risk tweaking it again w/ a whole bunch of flying coming up in 7 days!

When I started my stretches this morning, I felt a slight twinge in my calf. Not just any twinge, it was in the same area that I've had problems w/. So I bailed on the workout and spent 2 hours palpating, massaging, and stretching my calves. Hopefully an extra day off

So after Wednesday's twinge, I decided to back off a bit. I walked 1mi in my running shoes, ran 1mi, walked .5mi. I think I'll stick w/ this for at least another week. Of course next week I'll miss at least one run, since I lose a whole 24 hours flying.

But I felt good today. A little muscle soreness in the calves, but nothing bad. Everything else, including lungs felt good.

Did my push-ups and sit-ups at the end.

Walked .5mi, ran 1mi, walked .25mi, ran .25mi, walked .25mi

Felt good. Legs were a little heavy at the end of the 1mi run. Strong head wind on the way out.

Shins were pretty tight at the end of the 1mi run. I stopped and stretched them for a second, before going into the walk.

Did my push-ups and sit-ups. Couldnt quite hang w/ the sit-ups.. only got 90 instead of the 106 I was suppose to do today. Got all 80 push-ups though!

Dont know when my next post will be.. dont really know when my next work-out will be either, but I should have time to get one in Friday at the latest!

.5mi walk, 1.75mi run, .25mi walk, .25mi run, .25mi walk.

Felt good, finally got adjusted to the time change AND actually had time to run. I should have just got up and ran at least one of the last few morning when I woke up in the middle of the night and couldnt go back to sleep..

But felt good, and I can now say I've run on 2 continents.
